Why we rely on breast augmentation with autologous fat

Women who are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts and would like more volume for a plumper cleavage are now finding out more about the options available. More and more women are looking for alternatives to breast augmentation with implants. Lipofilling, i.e. breast augmentation with autologous fat, is an appealing method full of advantages that is now being chosen more and more often. Why? We explain in this article.

Breast augmentation with implants: There are clear disadvantages

First of all: Please note that we do not want to criticise breast augmentation with implants in this article. We simply want to inform you about the disadvantages that this type of breast augmentation CAN (but does not HAVE to) have.

First of all, it is important to remember that the classic method of breast augmentation is a surgical procedure with corresponding risks - such as intolerance to the anaesthetic or wound healing disorders.

It works by inserting saline implants (increasingly rare) or silicone implants (state-of-the-art procedure) into the woman's breast. They can be inserted through an incision in the underbust crease, through the areola or through the armpit and placed either above or below the pectoral muscle.

There are two basic shapes of implants to choose from: anatomically shaped and round. The anatomically shaped implants have a teardrop shape and fill the lower part of the breast when inserted. They generally look more natural - unlike round implants, which enlarge the breast in both the lower and upper areas and therefore often result in an artificial and "made" look.

In general, if a woman wants to have her breasts enlarged with implants, it is advisable to use high-quality implants from reputable manufacturers to avoid complications and dissatisfaction. They are also safer.

One such manufacturer is Allergan. However, not all that glitters is gold here either: in mid-December 2018, the approval for Allergan's textured silicone implants was not extended. They are suspected of favouring the development of a specific and rare type of cancer (anaplastic large cell lymphoma, ALCL). Although the probability of developing the disease was considered to be very low, there is still a potential risk.

Women who have undergone breast augmentation with the aforementioned roughened silicone implants from Allergan should definitely have a medical examination if there is a strong accumulation of fluid in the breast, asymmetry and/or pain at least one year after the operation. Please remain calm: these symptoms do not automatically indicate cancer. In some cases, but not in all cases, it is advisable to remove the implants in question.

Implants (regardless of the Allergan brand) can also cause further discomfort: some women develop capsular fibrosis, which requires treatment and in which the body forms a layer of connective tissue, similar to scar tissue, around the implant. In some cases, this can contract around the implant and cause pain. Breast augmentation with implants can also result in asymmetry of the operated breasts, pain, displacement of the implant, the formation of a second underbust fold (dubble-bubble) as well as nipple discomfort or swelling.

Breast augmentation with autologous fat: an alternative with many advantages

For the above-mentioned reasons, we have decided not to include the Acura clinic also the Breast augmentation with autologous fat offer. We would like to position lipofilling as a natural alternative to breast augmentation with implants.

This type of breast augmentation does not require traditional surgery, e.g. cutting open the underbust area and "stuffing" the implant in. For the Lipofilling We remove excess fat from another part of the body (e.g. the abdomen) using small liposuction, prepare it specially and inject the removed fat cells into the subcutaneous tissue of the breast and under the pectoral muscle in a fan shape using very fine cannulas.

This procedure is gentle and far less drastic than the insertion of implants. As no incision needs to be made, virtually no scars remain. Only minimal incisions are made for the cannulas during the Liposuction and the injection. This is not only gentler on the body, but also involves less pain in the chest area.

As the inserted fat cells are the patient's own body material, a rejection reaction of the body, as with the "foreign body implant", can be ruled out.

Another advantage is the natural look and feel. Breasts augmented with autologous fat do not look artificial and feel just like a natural breast. The breasts also move in the same way.

Our breast augmentation with autologous fat is particularly suitable for women who would like to have their breasts gently plumped up - and are also unsure about the size.

With lipofilling, the breast can be enlarged by around half a cup size, which means an increase of around 100 to 150 millilitres per breast. But that's not the end of it - if the patient wants a little more, a repeat treatment can follow after around three months, in which the same amount of fat can be inserted.

It is important to note: The body breaks down around 40 per cent of the fat cells introduced. However, the "surplus" remains permanently.

Incidentally, treatments with autologous fat are generally becoming more and more popular. And excess fat cells can be used for more than just adding sexy volume to the breasts: The autologous fat treatment can also be used to plump up wrinkles.
