blemishes and acne, scars and Pigment spots, Redness and rosacea, skin dryness and wrinkles: There are various factors that can affect the appearance of beautiful facial skin. For many women and men, it is also sebaceous cysts on the face that limit the aesthetics. But what is the difference between classic blemishes and sebaceous cysts - and how can they be removed? We explain in this article.
What is a sebaceous cyst?
Sebaceous cysts are benign skin cysts that develop from hair follicles. They develop when the duct of the sebaceous gland follicle is blocked and sebum and dead skin cells accumulate in the follicle cavity.
Sebaceous cysts often occur on the face. However, they can also form on the scalp, neck or back, for example, and appear as more or less small, raised, sharply defined, round structures in the skin with a characteristic dark spot in the centre.
What is the difference between normal skin blemishes and sebaceous cysts on the face?
- Normal skin blemishes such as blackheads or pimples are usually caused by an overproduction of sebum in the skin. Hair follicles. Sebaceous cysts, on the other hand, are special cysts that arise from the hair follicle and are filled with sebum and dead skin cells.
- Classic skin blemishes are often small black or white dots that are visible in the pores. Pimples can appear as raised, inflamed and purulent lesions. In contrast, sebaceous cysts are round or oval nodules under the skin with a characteristic black dot in the centre.
- While pimples and blackheads can become inflamed and cause pain or itching, sebaceous cysts are usually symptom-free. However, they usually become larger over time. If they become inflamed, e.g. by rubbing the skin vigorously, they become red and painful. A yellow liquid with a foul odour may also leak out.
- You can treat blemished skin with suitable skin care. However, sebaceous cysts do not respond to anti-pimple products. They require professional treatment and minor surgery.
Removing sebaceous cysts on the face: what you need to know
Skin that is prone to spots and blackheads can be treated well in the beauty parlour. Regular cleansing of the skin can help to make the skin look cleaner and healthier and the pores appear smaller.
However, this method is not suitable for sebaceous cysts. If you simply have them squeezed out, the cyst will fill up again after a while and you will not have a permanent solution. There is only one way to achieve long-term freedom from cysts: have the troublesome sebaceous cyst on your face surgically removed. This is not possible in a beauty parlour, as sterile conditions must be maintained for the minor operation. It also requires an experienced surgeon - like at our Acura Clinic in Weert.
To remove the cyst, we make an incision in your skin. In the next step, we remove the entire cyst capsule. By removing the capsule, it can no longer fill with sebum, etc. We then clean and treat the wound professionally and close it with sutures. When removing a sebaceous cyst on the face, we pay particular attention to fine sutures that are not aesthetically noticeable later - similar to a Facelift.
Removal of sebaceous cysts on the face in Weert
Sebaceous cysts do not disappear by themselves. You should not treat them at home by squeezing them out, as this can lead to infections. Even cosmetic treatments will not make sebaceous cysts on the face disappear permanently. We advise you to first have the cyst dermatologically examined and then treated as part of our Minor surgery surgically removed. In our Acura clinic in Weert we have competent and experienced contacts for this.
