For comparison: What is meant by a classic facelift?
A traditional facelift is one of the established procedures in aesthetic facial surgery. It is primarily considered when the face has significantly lost its elasticity and both the skin and deeper tissue layers have visibly sagged. This frequently affects not only the cheeks and the jawline, but also the transition to the neck.
In a surgical facelift, we look at the face comprehensively. The goal is not simply to pull the skin tighter. Modern facelift techniques also involve deeper tissue layers so that the result looks more stable, harmonious and natural. As a result, however, the procedure is often more extensive than minor tightening procedures.
This can mean that the operation takes longer, larger areas of tissue are released and the body needs more time to heal. Swelling, bruising and feelings of tightness can be more pronounced and last longer. The social downtime can also be extended as a result.
This very point plays an important role for many patients when they compare a traditional face-lift with less extensive face-lift techniques such as the MACS lift.
What is a MACS lift?
For individuals looking for visible tightening who do not want a very extensive procedure, a MACS facelift can be an interesting option. This method is one of the facelift techniques that uses a more limited approach and focuses on treating the lower face.
MACS stands for „Minimal Access Cranial Suspension“. Translated loosely, this means: lifting via a small access point with upward suspension. The name thus describes two central features of the method: a reduced surgical approach and an elevation of sagging tissue structures towards the temple.
We offer this procedure in our Clinic for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery in Weert (Netherlands) close to the German border.
How does a MACS lift work?
With the MACS facelift, we work with internal support sutures. These lift sagging tissue structures and stabilise them in their new position. The access point is usually located in the area in front of the ear. What changes are possible depends primarily on your skin quality, your tissue firmness and your general individual condition.
Why is the MACS lift considered a gentle procedure?
The procedure is particularly appealing when a visible tightening of the lower face is desired, but a traditional facelift seems too extensive. The method targets the areas where many patients notice initial changes: the cheek area, slight jowls, and a softened jawline.
What is important here is that the MACS lift is not simply a „lower facelift“. While this term mainly describes the region treated, the MACS variant is a specific surgical technique.
The advantage lies in the combination of efficacy and reduced surgical scope. The gentle lift can make the facial contour appear more defined and refresh the expression.
That makes the method particularly attractive under the right conditions:
- visible improvement of the lower facial contour
- clearer jawline for mild to moderate jowls
- smaller incision range compared to more extensive facelift techniques
- often more manageable recovery period
- naturally looking refresh rather than heavily altered facial features
„In this context, “gentler" does not mean that the MACS face lift has to be any less effective. Rather, the method proves its worth precisely when the condition does not require a very extensive procedure. For more pronounced changes, a traditional facelift may offer more possibilities. For early to moderate changes, however, the MACS procedure can represent a very sensible alternative.
MACS Lift or thread lift: What is the difference?
Many patients who are looking into a less extensive facelift also come across thread lifting, which we likewise offer at the Acuraklinik. Both methods share the goal of lifting sagging contours. However, the difference lies distinctly in the depth and stability of the treatment.
During a thread lift, special threads place the tissue into a slightly elevated position. The procedure does not require traditional surgery out and can be an option in early changes. However, the effect is usually more limited and is more suited to mild sagging.
The MACS facelift goes a step further. It is one of the surgical facelift techniques and stabilises deeper tissue structures using internal support sutures. As a result, the method can provide more support than a thread lift, without reaching the extent of a traditional facelift.
Who is a MACS facelift suitable for?
This anti-ageing option is particularly suitable for patients with early to moderate signs of ageing in the lower face. The decisive factor is not just what is bothersome, but whether the skin, tissue and facial structure are suited to the more limited approach of the method.
A good prerequisite often exists when:
- the skin is still sufficiently elastic
- the tissue has not sagged too much
- there is no pronounced excess of skin
- above all, cheeks, jawline and lower facial contour are to be improved
- a natural freshening up is more important than a maximum tightening
Age alone does not determine suitability. Much more important are skin quality, tissue stability, facial anatomy, and personal expectations regarding the result. During the consultation, we therefore carefully examine whether the MACS facelift suits your initial situation and what changes are realistically possible.
What results are possible with a MACS facelift?
A good result is usually not apparent from others immediately suspecting a procedure. Often, the face looks more refreshed, clearer and less „sunken“. The facial features retain their own character while the contours regain more structure.
With the MACS face lift, achieving the greatest possible change is not the primary focus. The method is designed to refresh the lower facial contours while harmoniously preserving facial expressions, look and proportions.
When is a MACS lift rather insufficient?
Under the right conditions, the MACS variant can be a less extensive alternative to a traditional facelift. However, it has clear limitations. If the skin and tissue are more saggy, the more limited approach is not always sufficient to achieve a harmonious and stable result.
A classic facelift or another facelift technique may be more appropriate for:
- clearly pronounced excess skin
- severe sagging in the lower face
- pronounced jowls
- visible sagging of the skin on the neck
- very soft or severely sagging tissue
- the desire for a more comprehensive streamlining
The neck in particular deserves a close look. If this area is to be treated as well, we carefully check whether a complementary or different method offers better conditions.
The gentler alternative is therefore not automatically the best choice. What remains crucial is what change you desire and which technique suits your anatomy. During the personal consultation, we will openly compare the options and explain which method makes sense from a medical and aesthetic perspective.
