Fat deposits on the upper arms, stomach, waist, hips or buttocks are often particularly annoying if they cannot be removed by a change in diet or regular exercise. If this is the case, many people think about having surgery. Liposuction after. This procedure can remove the unwanted fat deposits. But what does it actually look like after the operation: do you stay slim "forever" or do the fat cells return after liposuction?
Size of fat cells and their number make you fat or thin
Researchers have discovered that the majority of fat cells are formed during childhood and are created in the body. After that, the number usually remains constant.
If these fat cells have a lot of content, they become larger. To the outside world, this means that we put on weight and look fatter. However, the content of these so-called adipocytes can also shrink. We lose weight and look slimmer.
However, it is not just the size of the fat cells that determines whether you store fat on your stomach, legs or bottom. The number of adipocytes also plays a role. If a particularly large number of fat cells are naturally located in one part of the body, the area will always remain "flabbier" than the rest - even if you lose weight. Only the content of the fat cells can be influenced naturally, but not their number. In this context, one also speaks of a fat distribution disorder.
Liposuction can be used to surgically influence the number of fat cells: By suctioning them out and thus reducing their quantity, the body silhouette can be harmonised.
Liposuction: No procedure for overweight patients
Liposuction is a procedure in the field of body contouring. The aim is to model and optimise the figure.
The procedure is not intended for overweight people. In order to reduce the body weight of obese patients, such large amounts of fat would have to be removed that several liposuction procedures would be necessary. This could lead to metabolic disorders and other complications such as damaged blood vessels, high blood loss or damage to tissue structures.
Liposuction is therefore suitable as plastic surgery for those patients who are athletic, slim and in good shape, but have a genetically unfavourable distribution of fat cells.
Liposuction: Do the liposuctioned fat cells come back?
Many patients who want to undergo liposuction ask in advance: "Will I be slim forever after the procedure?". The truth is that once fat cells have been removed by liposuction, they cannot form again and therefore do not come back. The adipocytes that are removed during the procedure have disappeared and are therefore no longer able to fill up with fat.
This also means that patients who have already adopted a healthy lifestyle with exercise and a balanced diet before liposuction can benefit from the procedure - provided they continue to watch their weight or start to do so after the operation.
However, patients who wish to undergo liposuction should be aware that not all fat cells are removed during the procedure, nor is the entire body treated. Liposuction only covers the agreed area. If the daily calorie intake permanently exceeds a certain level, weight gain cannot be ruled out even after liposuction - and thus also new fat deposits from other/remaining fat cells. However, as long as the weight gain remains manageable, the results of liposuction will remain visible.
