Lipoma on the back: Does the benign tumour have to be removed by surgery?

Lipoma on the back

A beautiful back can also be delightful - or so they say. However, there are all kinds of skin conditions that can restrict a beautiful back. These include, for example, pimples, blackheads and sometimes large moles or warts. Lipomas also frequently appear on the back. These are benign tumours that form a lump and therefore look unsightly. But does a lipoma on the back need to be removed? And what does the treatment look like?

What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign tumour that consists of Fatty tissue exists. It is an accumulation of fat cells with a soft, rubbery consistency. Lipomas often appear as small, mobile nodules under the skin, but can also occur in deeper layers of tissue or organs - and can take on considerable dimensions.

Lipomas can appear at any age and can occur in various parts of the body, e.g. on the neck, shoulders, back, arms, thighs or abdomen.

Can lipomas on the back cause discomfort?

Although lipomas are generally medically harmless, they can cause discomfort. Lipomas can - if they reach a certain size or occur in sensitive areas of the body - cause a feeling of pressure or tension or even pain. This is particularly the case if they develop near nerves or grow into the muscles.

However, it is primarily cosmetic impairments that can be caused by fatty tumours.

Lipoma removal on the back with a minor surgical procedure

We can remove a lipoma on the back in various ways - depending on where exactly the fatty tumour is located, how large it is and how deep it is. In most cases, we make a small incision in the skin above the lipoma and push out the contents. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the fatty tissue in small pieces - e.g. if it is strongly fused with the tissue, very large or simply stubborn. We then close the wound with fine sutures. You will be given a local anaesthetic for the procedure.
