Every body is unique. It is therefore normal for the labia to differ in size, shape and colour from woman to woman. However, some women have significantly larger labia than others. If the labia minora are too large, this can lead to problems. For example, large labia can cause pain during sport or sexual intercourse. If the discomfort gets out of hand, a labiaplasty may be advisable. We can reduce the size of your labia at our clinic in Weert.
What are labia?
The labia, also known as the labia, are part of a woman's external genitalia. They consist of two pairs of skin folds that surround the vulva. The labia majora are the larger, outer folds of skin that extend from the clitoris to the perineum. The labia minora are smaller, thinner folds of skin that are located inside the labia majora.
The labia have different functions: They protect the more sensitive areas of the vulva such as the clitoris and the vaginal opening. They also help to keep moisture in the vagina and contribute to sexual stimulation.
Possible consequences of labia that are too large
The size of the labia can vary considerably from woman to woman. Basically, there is no standardised definition of what is considered "too big". What one woman finds problematic or uncomfortable may be completely normal for another.
However, there are certain situations that are uncomfortable for women with larger labia: Labia that are too large can chafe - especially when wearing tight clothing or doing sports (e.g. jogging, horse riding or cycling). This can lead to pain, irritation or inflammation. Affected women may also be restricted during sexual intercourse. The friction during intercourse or when the labia are pinched or pulled can be very uncomfortable. In addition, larger labia can cause Intimate hygiene and increase the risk of infections. Sweat, urine or menstrual blood can accumulate in the folds and lead to unpleasant odours or infections.
Labia reduction: How labiaplasty is performed
The Labiaplasty aims to adjust the shape and size of your labia. One of the most common methods is labia minora reduction. In this technique, we remove excess tissue to reduce the size of your labia and achieve a symmetrical appearance. You will be given a local anaesthetic for the procedure or light sedation if you wish.
