Hyperhidrosis treatment armpits: How long does the effect last?

Hyperhidrosis treatment armpits

Sweating is normal - e.g. in the warm season, during physical exertion or during sport. However, there are also people who always sweat heavily, regardless of the outside temperature or their activity. This occurs particularly frequently under the armpits. In such cases, the disease hyperhidrosis, in which the sweat glands are overactive, may be the cause. If you are affected by this, you do not have to put up with the discomfort. We can significantly reduce sweat production by using botulinum. Everything you need to know about the treatment of hyperhidrosis under the armpits in our Clinic in Weert you need to know in the following.

Special sweat glands under the arms

The main function of sweating is to cool the body down at high temperatures. During physical exertion, heat or excitement, the nerves send signals to the sweat glands so that they produce a secretion. This is then transported to the surface of the skin, where it evaporates. In this way, the body extracts heat from itself.

There are special sweat glands under the armpits: the apocrine sweat glands. In contrast to the eccrine sweat glands, which are distributed all over the body and produce clear, odourless sweat, they secrete a thicker sweat. This can also develop the characteristic unpleasant odour.

How to recognise hyperhidrosis under the armpits

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the Sweat glands are overactive and secrete significantly more sweat than is necessary to regulate body temperature. The armpits are most frequently affected.

People with armpit hyperhidrosis can sweat profusely even with little physical exertion or at rest. The sweating can be so profuse that it affects the everyday life of those affected. It can even lead to social isolation or emotional stress.

Hyperhidrosis treatment armpits: how long the effect lasts

To treat excessive sweating under the armpits, we use Botulinum in. We inject the active ingredient under your armpit skin at square intervals using a fine cannula. We anaesthetise this beforehand with an anaesthetic ointment. As a rule, we carry out around 10 to 20 injections per armpit.

The Botulinum toxin blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which normally stimulates the sweat glands, for several months. This blockade inhibits excessive sweat production.

After botulinum injections, it usually takes a few days to two weeks for the full effect to set in. This then lasts for around six months. If the hyperhidrosis recurs, you can have the treatment repeated.
