How to compensate for breast asymmetry

Correcting breast asymmetry

Beautiful, shapely breasts - women and men are equally happy about this. However, some women's breasts are not the shape they want: They are too big, too small or too different. If the two breasts differ by one cup size or more, there is breast asymmetry. In this blog post, we explain how this can be treated with breast augmentation.

Breast asymmetry: causes

Hardly any woman has breasts that are exactly the same size. There are always differences, but they are usually so small that they are not noticeable. In some patients, however, this difference is very serious and immediately catches the eye: they have breast asymmetry, where one breast is significantly larger than the other.

Various causes can lead to asymmetrical breasts. These include

Disorders or genetic defects

In certain genetic disorders, one breast is completely missing or is significantly smaller than the other. This includes the Amazon syndromewhich results in the malformation of a mammary gland. Also the Poland syndrome can affect the breast: Those affected are missing the entire pectoral muscle or parts of it. This often results in asymmetry - with other symptoms such as breast pigmentation disorders.

Inherited breast asymmetry

Like breasts that are too small or too large, asymmetrical breasts can also be congenital/inherited.

Diseases and operations

Some women acquire breast asymmetry in the course of their lives, for example when they become ill (e.g. breast cancer, inflammation of the mammary gland, cysts, lipomas). Diseases can be accompanied by operations, (partial) amputations and scarring, which can affect breast size.

Weight change

Breast asymmetry can also be the result of extreme and rapid weight fluctuations.

Many women who have a noticeable difference in the size of their two breasts feel uncomfortable with this. They don't feel feminine enough and often have reduced self-confidence and self-esteem. They are bothered by having to put inserts in their bra to compensate for the size difference and are often ashamed to present themselves to their partner. Breast asymmetry can also lead to back pain and postural problems.

If this is the case, breast augmentation can be performed:

Breast augmentation with implants

Breast surgery can be performed to make the breast that is too small match the size of the other breast by enlarging it with a silicone implant. It is also possible to enlarge both breasts. In this case, we use a smaller implant for the larger breast and a larger implant for the smaller breast.

Breast augmentation with autologous fat (lipofilling)

If you do not want to undergo major surgery with the associated risks and prefer a gentler correction of breast asymmetry, we can also perform lipofilling. This means that we remove fatty tissue from a suitable part of the body in a smaller liposuction procedure, prepare it and inject it into the smaller breast to gently adjust it to the size of the other breast. Of course, we can also treat both breasts.
