Healing after a labiaplasty

Healing after a labiaplasty

After every surgical procedure, the healing phase is an important aspect - and this is also the case after a Labiaplasty. Patients who undergo this procedure should be informed about certain points and follow special behavioural measures. In this article, we have summarised some tips for the time after labiaplasty at our Acura Clinic in Weert.

Reasons for a labia reduction

Labiaplasty can be performed for aesthetic-cosmetic or medical reasons.

  • Aesthetic and cosmetic reasons for a labiaplasty in Weert
If the labia minora are too long, they protrude from the covering of the labia majora (labial hypertrophy). Many women - especially in the age of intimate shaving - feel disturbed by this appearance. It is also possible that the labia minora affect self-confidence if they are too long and show under clothing, for example. Another common reason for dissatisfaction is when the volume and proportion of fatty tissue in the labia minora decreases. This is usually caused by the natural ageing process. In this case, the labia often hang down shapelessly and limply.
  • Medical reasons for a labiaplasty in Weert
Oversized labia minora can cause discomfort for patients. They often rub against each other when walking or jogging, chafe against tight clothing or get in the way when riding a horse or bike. Sometimes they also cause discomfort during sexual intercourse, especially if the labia minora become indented during sex. Furthermore, very long labia minora can also favour skin irritation, inflammation or frequent fungal infections.

In all these cases, labiaplasty can help women to feel comfortable in their skin again.

How you can support healing after labiaplasty
  • The labia are well supplied with blood, which favours rapid healing. We recommend that you keep the genital area cool immediately after the procedure and for the next few days.
  • In the event of post-operative bleeding, it is best to roll up a towel and place it between your legs.
  • Rest is very important in the days following intimate surgery. Your body needs to recover and needs strength for the healing process.
  • If pain occurs, it can be treated with mild over-the-counter painkillers (paracetamol or ibuprofen, not aspirin!)
  • You can shower the day after the procedure. It is also advisable to rinse the wound carefully twice a day with the shower head. Soap and water are sufficient. Please refrain from using additional creams, lotions or disinfectants.
  • Once the stitches have disappeared (after approx. 3 weeks), you can also perform sitz baths in a lukewarm camomile solution. This supports the healing process and prevents infections.
  • Light sporting activities are possible again after about a week. Sports that place a strain on the genital area (e.g. horse riding or cycling) should only be resumed after healing (approx. three weeks). You can swim after the stitches have dissolved (also approx. three weeks).
  • Refrain from intimate intercourse until the tissue in the operated area no longer feels sensitive (approx. three to four weeks).
