The VPÄPC - the Association of German Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons - commented on the impact of the coronavirus crisis on cosmetic surgery at a press conference in early July 2020. There it was announced that aesthetic plastic surgery can and will undergo drastic changes as a result of COVID-19. Since the crisis, the nature of demand for aesthetic treatments has changed for many doctors and surgeons. Many patients are taking the time of lockdown and working from home as an opportunity to think about optimising their appearance and having it done. In this summarised article, we would like to inform you about the exact content that was announced at this press conference. There are some interesting aspects - both for us doctors and for patients.
High demand for aesthetic procedures
Despite - or perhaps precisely BECAUSE of - corona and Covid-19, interest is high and the demand for aesthetic procedures is increasing. However, the options vary from country to country due to the different legal situation. As a result, patients with procedures that involve a hospital stay may have to wait longer due to the various protective measures. Another challenge for the industry is the additional logistical effort required due to the increased protective measures for plastic surgery and the associated costs.
Increased demand for facial treatments due to mask requirement
It was also mentioned at the press conference that patients have been asking for aesthetic procedures or special facial treatments more frequently since Covid-19. This could be due to the fact that the mask requirement changes the way we look in the mirror. Where the gaze would otherwise be directed at the entire face, the mask now focuses more on the eye area. As a result, many patients are currently seeking eyelid correction - be it an upper eyelid lift to treat drooping eyelids or a lower eyelid lift to treat bags under the eyes. Wrinkle treatments with BTX are particularly popular for crow's feet and frown lines.
Another trend is lip corrections or lip augmentation, e.g. with a hyaluronic acid filler or autologous fat (lipofilling). The treatment can lead to temporary bruising, redness or swelling, which can be concealed with a mask until they have healed.
Great interest in liposuction
Liposuction is also very much in vogue: Interest in liposuction has skyrocketed among women and men during the coronavirus pandemic. This could be due to the fact that many patients have gained weight while working from home and problem areas that cannot be tackled with exercise and diet have become more visible.
Corona crisis creates new body awareness
The last few months have shown that many patients are using the crisis for self-reflection and therefore self-optimisation. This is because they have more time to focus on themselves and their appearance. Many patients want to look fresher, which is why small treatments with hyaluronic acid and BTX are becoming even more popular.
Beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery in times of corona
Aesthetic procedures that are medically necessary are mainly carried out during the pandemic. However, for treatments that are not medically necessary and can still wait, patients should be patient. After all, health comes before beauty - this was clearly emphasised at the press conference.
