Cryolipolysis: Can you simply freeze fat away?

Cryolipolysis

Do you recognise this situation? Is there a fat pad bulging out above your waistband and showing under your clothes, but it can't be tackled properly and in the long term with diets or exercise? This is usually due to a fat distribution disorder - the number of fat cells is increased in the affected problem area. When losing weight, their size is reduced, but their number remains unchanged. Such "body fat" cannot be satisfactorily combated by natural means. For a long time, liposuction was considered the only way to remove excess fat cells. But now there is a new procedure that works completely without surgery: Using cryolipolysis, abdominal fat, for example, can simply be frozen away. In this article, we explain how this works and for whom the method is suitable.

How does cryolipolysis work?

In cryolipolysis, a special device is used to cool individual fat deposits, e.g. on the upper or lower abdomen, to temperatures of around four degrees. This cooling interrupts the blood supply to the fat cells. They become detached and some of them die off. At the same time, a harmless inflammation occurs in the subcutaneous tissue, which activates the immune system. The body's own defence cells remove the dead fat cells naturally via the lymphatic and blood system, the liver and the kidneys. The skin remains undamaged during this treatment.

History of cryolipolysis

In the 1980s, the first reports emerged that fat cells react sensitively to cold. Dermatologists such as Dieter Manstein and Rox Anderson from Harvard Medical School dedicated themselves to researching the process of "fat melting". Their first promising investigations were carried out on pigs' bellies. Eventually, they set about developing a device that could also achieve this effect in humans. The triumphant advance of cryolipolysis began slowly but steadily in 2008.

Today, cryolipolysis devices can be found in many practices and beauty clinics, where they treat annoying, sports-resistant fat deposits by freezing the fat cells away.

Who is cryolipolysis suitable for?

However, anyone hoping to lose weight in this cold but simple way will be disappointed. The cold treatment is not a substitute for a diet and should therefore not be used for people who are overweight, have metabolic or autoimmune diseases or are pregnant.

The focus is more on people of normal weight who also exercise. Cryolipolysis can help them to model or optimise imperfect areas of the body silhouette, without the need to undergo surgery, as is the case with the Liposuction the knife must be applied.

How quickly are the results of cryolipolysis visible?

Unlike liposuction, the fat deposits do not disappear immediately. The body's own "breakdown process" takes some time. Results are visible after about six to eight weeks.

This slow fat removal also has its advantages: The skin can adapt to the gradual process and slowly contract again. This is similar to the reverse situation when the skin and tissue slowly stretch as the belly grows during pregnancy.

This is because some health complaints, chronic illnesses or circulatory and wound healing disorders preclude treatment. An experienced doctor should be present to assess and respond to this.

At the Acura Clinic in Weert, you will be assisted by a competent, trained team of doctors who have already successfully used cryolipolysis on many patients.
